INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Theft of Medications from BRH
Date: 2018-04-17
From: Erann Kalwara - JPD PIO
Case or Incident: #180410-015
Summary:

On April 10th at around 6:30pm, staff from Bartlett Regional Hospital reported that several medications were missing from a room in the Emergency Department. The medications included narcotics, analgesics and sedatives that, as part of a kit, are utilized to resuscitate patients who are unable to breathe on their own. Part of the process of deploying the medication is to provide oxygen and intubation with ventilation to allow the patient to breathe. Without following the medical procedure fully, the drugs are very dangerous as they will stop or slow respiratory activity, resulting in death.

One of the stolen medications is succinylcholine which is a paralyzing agent. If used improperly, the person would be awake and alert mentally but suddenly paralyzed and unable to breathe on their own.

In the hands of medical professionals, the stolen kit is a part of a life-saving process. Outside of a controlled healthcare setting, injection or use of these medications are potentially lethal.

JPD officers are actively working on the investigation and encourage anyone with information to call JPD at 907-586-0600 or make an anonymous tip online at JuneauCrimeline.com.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues.
