Summary:

On March 3rd, 2018 at approximately 2:04 PM, the Juneau Police Department received a report of a theft at a business, located in the 600 block of Willoughby Ave.

Officers responded to the business and met with the employee who was working when the theft occurred. The employee reported that an unknown male came into the store, ate food samples and then went into the stores bathroom for a long period of time. When the male exited the bathroom, he had paper towels stuffed underneath his glasses, to form a type of mask. The male walked over to the counter where the employee was working and stole the employee's pencil pouch, which had been lying on the counter while she did school work. The man then ran out of the store. Video surveillance from inside the store recorded a description of the suspect.

Soon afterwards, at about 2:50 PM, the Juneau Police Department received a report of a burglary in progress at a residence in the 500 block of West 9th Street. Officers went to the residence and contacted the home owner. Inside the basement of the residence, Officers located thirty-nine year old Juneau resident, Michael Hoyt.

The homeowner did not know Hoyt and Hoyt had in his possession several property items that were identified as belonging to the homeowner. The property items were a purse, an Apple Ipad, ID card, small amount of cash and an empty cell phone case. The combined value of the stolen property was valued at about $440.

The investigation into both incidents showed that Michael Hoyt matched the physical description of the suspect from the earlier store theft.

Michael Hoyt was placed under arrest for Burglary 1st degree, a class B felony, theft 3rd degree, a class A misdemeanor, and theft 4th degree, a class B misdemeanor. Hoyt was taken to the Lemon Creek Correctional Center and held without bail.
