On February 1st, 2018 two Juneau Police Department officers attempted to contact 24 year old Juneau resident James Urbanec outside a residence on Tongass Boulevard. When officers advised Urbanec that he had an outstanding warrant, Urbanec unzipped his jacket and started to draw a handgun from the jacket. Urbanec then fled the area on foot and secured himself inside his residence.
Additional officers responded to the area to assist in contacting Urbanec and securing the residence. Officers maintained a presence outside for approximately three hours that night and returned again on February 2nd.
At about 5:12pm on February 2nd, Urbanec was spotted in the area of the Mendenhall Mall. He left the area on foot and was contacted 20 minutes later by officers on Mendenhall Loop Road near Nancy Street.
Urbanec was arrested on two counts of Assault on an Officer, one count of Resisting Arrest and the $100 JPD warrant charging Failure to Appear for Change of Plea Hearing, Original Charge Reckless Endangerment . He was transported to the Lemon Creek Correctional Center.
