INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: New Year PSA
Date: 2016-12-28
From: Lt David Campbell
Case or Incident: #N/A
Summary:

The Juneau Police Department would like to remind everyone planning to celebrate the arrival of 2017, to plan for a designated driver if your celebration involves impairing substances and going out. Juneau CHARR is also offering a Safe Ride Home program on New Year?s Eve from participating locations. Just look for a taxi with green flashing lights.

On an average Saturday night, JPD has 5 to 7 patrol officers on duty. On the night of December 31st, 2016, JPD will have 16 officers on duty. Four of those officers are assigned to investigate drivers who might be intoxicated.

This is also a reminder that the safe use of concussive fireworks will be legal from 10:00 AM on New Year?s Eve to 1:00 AM on New Year?s Day. Using concussive fireworks outside of this time period, and south of Cohen Drive, is prohibited. On Monday, 12/26/2016, two residents were cited for using concussive fireworks during the prohibited period.

JPD is kicking off the 2017-Year of Kindness initiative on the first day of 2017. Driving sober and the proper use of fireworks is an act of kindness.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues.
