INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Inclement Road Conditions
Date: 2016-12-18
From: Sgt. Brian Dallas
Case or Incident: #
Summary:

With the recent inclement weather, ground temperatures are lower than air temperatures. When this happens, the ground temperature is causing water on the roadways to freeze from the temperature of the asphalt and forming icy road conditions around town.

Chemicals and sand are being placed on the roadways during this condition, but as the rain washes the chemicals from the roadway new ice may be forming. The roadway becomes a mixture wet asphalt and icy roads.

Please be aware of continually changing road conditions. This condition has caused numerous motor vehicle accidents and vehicles to slide off the roadway. This condition is expected to be present again tonight and early tomorrow morning.

Department of Transportation road crews and City and Borough of Juneau Streets crews are aware of the condition and are working continuously to improve Juneau roads. Main highways and arteries will be the primary focus followed by side roads and neighborhoods.

The Juneau Police Department reminds drivers tonight and during the morning commute to please give yourself extra time to get to your destination, drive at reasonable speeds for the conditions, and be cautious of pedestrians as braking distances may increase with the icy roadways.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
