INFORMATION RELEASE

On 10/15/16 at about 1100 hours, the Juneau Police Department (JPD) received a report of a three vehicle collision on Mendenhall Loop Rd near Thunder Mountain Rd.

JPD officers and Capital City Fire and Rescue (CCFR) responded as there were reported injuries. Upon arrival, both lanes of Mendenhall Loop Rd were shut down between Mendenhall Blvd and Taku Blvd. The road was closed for about an hour before the scene could be cleared.

An investigation revealed that a silver 2011 Subaru Impreza, driven by a 69 year old male, stopped in the northbound lane of Mendenhall Loop Rd behind a vehicle that was waiting to turn left onto Taku Blvd. A 1999 gray Dodge Durango, driven by a 22 year old male, also traveling north on Mendenhall Loop Rd, was slowing down behind the Impreza. A blue 2006 Nissan Armada, driven by 41 year old Jana Pierce, traveling north behind the Dodge Durango, failed to slow down, struck the rear end of the Durango, and pushed the Durango into the Subaru Impreza. The combined damage of all three vehicles was estimated at over $15,000 and all three vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

Seven people were transported to Bartlett Regional Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. All of the drivers were transported, as well as three passengers from the Durango and one passenger from the Impreza.

Jana Pierce was cited for Failing to Maintain a Safe Distance, a violation.
