On September 10, 2016, at about 3:36 AM, the Juneau Police Department received a call from a night stocker at Safeway stating that someone had broken into the store and was currently inside. The caller reported the employees were hiding in the back of the store and requested police assistance.
Officers arrived on scene two minutes later and located a smashed window near one of the main entry doors. Officers could see a male suspect walking around the front of the store and then disappear from sight. A few minutes later, the male exited the back of the store carrying some merchandise. He was taken into custody without further incident.
The male was later identified as 23 year old Kurtis Detemple. He was transported to and lodged at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center on charges of Burglary in the 2nd, Criminal Mischief in the 3rd Degree, and Theft in the 4th Degree. Burglary in the 2nd Degree is a class C felony, Criminal Mischief in the 3rd Degree is a class C felony, and Theft in the 4th is a class B misdemeanor. Detemple was held without bail per the bail schedule.
Damages to the store were in excess of $1,000.00 and approximately $50.00 worth of merchandise was stolen.
