INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Disturbance involving a man with a knife
Date: 2016-09-03
From: Sergeant Krag Campbell
Case or Incident: #160903-010
Summary:

On September 3rd, 2016, at 4:24PM, the Juneau Police Department received a report of a man waving a knife around in the middle of the intersection of Main Street and Egan Drive.

Officers responded and contacted a 52 year old Juneau resident who appeared to be under the influence of an unknown impairing substance, and who was having a mental health emergency.

The man said he was using the knife to defend himself from imaginary animals that were attacking him.

When officers arrived they had their firearms out due to the potential threat of the man with the knife.

Officers ordered the man to drop the knife and he complied. The man was detained in handcuffs and ultimately taken to the Bartlett Regional Hospital for a medical evaluation.

The man was later admitted to the hospital for further medical treatment due to mental health issues and substance abuse.

Neither the officers nor the man were injured during this incident.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
