INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Motor Vehicle Hit and Run - Person of Interest
Date: 2016-08-30
From: Erann Kalwara - JPD PIO
Case or Incident: #160828-005 & 160829-015
Summary:

On August 28th, 2016 at about 3:19pm, a JPD officer observed a red Toyota Corolla with two occupants on Mendenhall Loop Road near Stephen Richards Memorial Drive. The officer recognized the driver as a subject with outstanding arrest warrants. The officer turned around and followed the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle in the area of Lakeside Condominiums. The vehicle sped up and left the area, driving onto Bresee Street, turning on Lori Avenue and then onto Tongass Boulevard where the vehicle briefly stopped. The passenger got out of the vehicle and the vehicle sped away from the area. The passenger was contacted and identified as a 31 year old female who was on probation. The female was remanded by Adult Probations.

On August 29th, 2016 at about 11:43am a JPD officer saw a silver Chrysler occupied by three people in the area of Switzer Creek Trailer Park. As the officer pulled up to contact the subjects, the vehicle fled the area. The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop but the vehicle failed to stop and drove recklessly at a high rate of speed. The attempt to stop the vehicle was discontinued for safety reasons.
The suspect vehicle was later observed on Mendenhall Loop Road (Back Loop) near the Mendenhall River Bridge by a Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer. That officer also attempted to conduct a traffic stop and ultimately followed the vehicle onto Glacier Highway where it continued driving inbound. An Alaska State Trooper was positioned near the Bus Barn on Back Loop and relayed the vehicle passed without stopping. The suspect vehicle was last seen near the Brotherhood Bridge turning off toward the Airport.

At about 11:56am a 23 year old female called and advised that a silver vehicle had just struck a van she was operating. The female had been stopped at a stop sign on Del Rae Road and had just started to make a left turn onto Glacier Highway when the silver vehicle tried to pass her on the driver?s side. When the silver vehicle turned in front of the van, the front of the van struck the passenger side of the silver vehicle. The silver vehicle fishtailed and continued at a high rate of speed on Glacier Highway driving toward the airport. The female driver and her four juvenile passengers were not injured.

At about 12:28pm, the suspect vehicle was located near the Switzer Creek Trailer Park Recreation area. The vehicle was impounded.

Micah William Nelson, a 25 year old Juneau man, has been identified as a person of interest in these incidents. Nelson also has two outstanding Juneau AST felony warrants for Petition to Revoke Probation and failure to comply with probation on original charges of Misconduct Involving Controlled Substance 4th Degree and Driving Without a License.
The public is encouraged to contact JPD if they know the location of Micah Nelson.
