INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Weapon Discharge Damages School Bus
Date: 2016-08-25
From: Lt. Kris Sell
Case or Incident: #160824-011
Summary:

On August 24, 2016, at about 1550 hours, an employee of the First Student school bus company called the Juneau Police Department to report there was a bullet hole in one of their buses and they knew how the incident had happened. The investigation revealed the school bus had just turned on to Sharon Street from Riverside Drive with the driver, an aide, and two students on the bus at the time of the incident. The bus driver said a window of the bus shattered and two men in their 20s came running toward the bus from a house in the 9200 block of Sharon Street.

One of the men, a 21 year old man from Juneau, was identified as the man who shot a round from a Glock 9 mm handgun through the front door of the home on Sharon Street. The bullet struck the school bus and lodged in the window frame. It appears the man did not believe the handgun was loaded.

A charge of Shooting a Firearm Within a Quarter Mile of a Roadway, a B misdemeanor, has been forwarded to the City Attorney?s Office.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
