INFORMATION RELEASE

On August 3rd, 2016, at 5:05PM, a Juneau Police Officer saw a possible disturbance between a male and a female in the 10000 block of Glacier Highway. The officer attempted to contact the male and female, but the male ran off. The male then locked himself inside a vehicle which was located in a nearby parking lot.

The male was identified as 24 year old Travis Richards. It was confirmed that Richards had a $1,000 warrant for his arrest, for failing to appear on a charge of assault and reckless driving.

Several police officers responded to the area to assist. Officers attempted to negotiate with Richards for about forty minutes, but he refused to get out of the vehicle. Richards was eventually pepper sprayed, which caused him to exit the vehicle. Richards was aggressive with officers when he exited the vehicle and was forcibly taken to the ground and restrained in handcuffs.

Capital City Fire and Rescue responded to evaluate Richards and assist with the removal of the pepper spray. Richards was later taken to the Bartlett Regional Hospital for a medical evaluation and further removal of the pepper spray.

Richards sustained minor abrasions due to the altercation with police. No officers were injured during this incident.

Richards was later taken to the Lemon Creek Correctional Center and held on the warrant and an additional charge of resisting arrest. Resisting arrest is a class A misdemeanor.
