INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: MVC- Injury
Date: 2016-07-06
From: Sgt. Chris Gifford
Case or Incident: #160706-008
Summary:

On 07-06-2016 at 12:42 PM, the Juneau Police Department received reports from several callers regarding a single-vehicle collision involving at least one pedestrian at the intersection of Mendenhall Loop Road and Tongass Boulevard. The responding officers found a 2008 Toyota Highlander, driven by a 36 year-old man, which had been traveling toward the Mendenhall Glacier when it left the roadway, struck a culvert, and crossed Tongass Boulevard. The vehicle came to rest on its side. Two children, ages 12 and 11, were crossing Tongass Boulevard at the time. The Toyota struck both of them, causing an apparently serious injury to the 12 year-old. The child was transported by ambulance to the Bartlett Regional Hospital. The driver of the Highlander was unhurt; the 11 year-old sustained minor injuries.

Traffic in the area was affected for about two hours as investigators processed the scene. This case is still under investigation.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
