INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Memorial Day Weekend Deployment
Date: 05-24-16
From: Lt. Kris Sell
Case or Incident: #N/A
Summary:

This coming weekend is Memorial Day Weekend and will also be when both Juneau high schools host graduation ceremonies. Traditionally, Memorial Day Weekend has been a time when the Juneau Police Department gets many calls regarding alcohol and drug involved behavior.

JPD is taking several steps to address the expected increase in calls for service and illegal behavior observed by officers. The Mobil Incident Command Vehicle will be parked and staffed by an officer at Eagle Beach to act as a headquarters for officers patrolling to the end of the road.

Also, additional officers and equipment over the standard weekend staffing will be deployed. This weekend marks the first use of JPD?s new unmarked patrol vehicle. That vehicle is a black Ford Interceptor with blue and red lights installed inside the main body of the car so the patrol vehicle maintains the outline of a civilian vehicle. The car is being assigned to JPD officers who have already demonstrated a commitment to DWI enforcement earlier this year.

JPD has also enlisted the help of members of the Juneau Citizen?s Patrol. Those volunteers will be driving the road system looking for spots that need to be checked for minor consuming parties and they will also observe and document suspicious driving. Those volunteers provide valuable assistance to JPD when the challenge is covering large areas during holiday weekends.

JPD hopes that everyone has a safe and happy Memorial Day Weekend.
