INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: DWI Crash at 19 Mile
Date: 2016-05-21
From: Sgt. Brian Dallas
Case or Incident: #160521-004
Summary:

On Saturday, May 21, 2016, at about 6:30 in the morning, the Juneau Police Department received multiple calls from people who heard a loud crash that sounded like a vehicle collision near 19-mile Glacier Highway. A woman who heard the loud crashing noise went to the roadway and reported that she had located a vehicle crash. The woman reported the driver stayed with the vehicle while an approximately 18 year old male passenger with a minor facial cut had left the area with another motorist.

The investigation revealed that 18 year old Daniel Justin Stevens of Juneau was driving inbound on Glacier Hwy at a high rate of speed when he said he swerved to avoid another vehicle. Stevens over-corrected, lost control, and struck a rock embankment. Stevens had no injuries and was arrested for driving while intoxicated. He later provided a breath sample of .146% breach alcohol. Stevens was transported to the Lemon Creek Correctional Center where he was later released on his own recognizance.

The vehicle he was driving, a 2007 Ford Focus, was estimated to be totaled at $4,500.00 damage. The vehicle was impounded and towed. The outbound lane of Glacier Hwy was partially blocked for approximately 1 hour.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
