INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Motor Vehicle Crash Involving Power Lines
Date: 2016-03-15
From: Officer Lee Phelps
Case or Incident: #160314-015
Summary:

On March 14th at about 10:04 PM, the Juneau Police Department (JPD) received a report of a motor vehicle crash on Glacier Highway, near Alaway Avenue. The caller reported a vehicle in the ditch and power lines lying on the ground with subjects calling for help from the vehicle.

Capital City Fire and Rescue (CCFR) along with JPD officers responded. Due to the downed power lines, Alaska Electric Light & Power (AELP) was called to the scene to cut the power so that emergency personnel could attend to the occupants of the vehicle.

The investigation revealed that a 29 year old male was driving a 2006 Pontiac with two passengers. The Pontiac was traveling outbound on Glacier Highway, near Alaway Avenue, when the driver believed they saw something crossing the road. The driver swerved, went over the curb, and struck a support pole for a main power line, causing the power pole to partially collapse. The vehicle landed on its side in the ditch.

CCFR personnel were able to remove two occupants from the vehicle, but the third occupant had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life. All three passengers were transported by ambulance to Bartlett Regional Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Glacier Highway, between Central Avenue and Alaway Avenue, is expected to be shut down for 3-4 hours during repairs. Power to the Lemon Creek Area is expected to be interrupted through the replacement of the pole and power lines. Power is expected to be disrupted in the Valley area for a short period of time as AELP crews make the final repairs.

Alcohol is a factor in this case. The investigation is ongoing.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues.
