INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Assault at Foodland IGA

Summary:

On 11-04-15, at 1358 hours, the Juneau Police Department received several calls regarding someone who had used pepper spray or a similar type of chemical spray inside Foodland IGA. Several people reported being effected, were coughing and requesting medical assistance.

JPD and CCFR responded to Foodland IGA to assist.

At about this same time, JPD received another report, regarding a welfare check on a male who was splashing water on his face in the area of Egan Drive and Channel Vista. JPD officers responded to assist, and located 29 year old Timothy James. It was determined that Timothy James was suffering the from the effects of a chemical spray, consistent with pepper spray or mace.

Timothy James was identified as the person who discharged the chemical spray at Foodland IGA, which caused physical pain to those that were effected.

Timothy James was placed under arrest for assault, a class A misdemeanor offense, and was lodged at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center. He was held on $1,500 bail.

During this incident, CCFR evaluated and assisted in the decontamination of those that were effected by the chemical spray. There were no reported injuries, and nobody was transported to the hospital.
