On 07/31/2015, at approximately 12:15 PM, the Juneau Police Department was notified of a theft at the Capital Building located on Fourth Street. In essence, Legislative Security reported that three men entered the construction zone at the capital at approximately 12:44 AM, and stole the American and Alaskan flags. The images of the three men were captured on surveillance cameras. The total theft of the two flags and rope was estimated at approximately $434.
On 08/04/2015, at approximately 12:06 PM, two men matching the description captured on the surveillance cameras came to JPD and spoke with an investigator. The two men admitted to stealing the flags after being out drinking in the downtown bars. The location of the flags are not known, but it was reported that both flags were discarded somewhere in the downtown area after the theft.
The men were identified as a 26 year old and 24 year old. The third man was identified, but he has not yet been interviewed. The men are not Juneau residents, but are in town working in the tourism industry.
The men were not arrested, but it is anticipated that charges for CBJ Trespass and Larceny will be filed with the City Attorney?s Office. Since the men were not arrested, their identities are not subject to release.
The investigation is continuing.
