INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Drug Drop-Off Box Date: 7-10-15

From: Lt. Kris Sell Case or Incident: N/A
Summary:

On July 13th, 2015 the Juneau Police Department will begin accepting prescription drugs for destruction. There is a locked drop-off box now located in the JPD lobby and available to the public during business hours. If you have prescription drugs and need to safely and legally dispose of those drugs you can put them into the drop-off box for incineration.

JPD is particularly interested in encouraging the proper disposal of prescription narcotics because they present two threats to the community. Many addicts report starting drug abuse by raiding medicine cabinets in homes and taking prescriptions belonging to other people. Also, drugs flushed down a toilet enter the water supply. Water treatment does not remove the chemicals associated with drugs.

The drug drop-off is anonymous though JPD records clerks will report suspicious behavior to on duty officers. An example of suspicious behavior would be someone trying to tamper with the security features of the box.

The drug drop-off is only for the public, not medical providers or clinics. Please do not put liquids, needles, or syringes into the box.

The JPD lobby is open weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m..
