On May 28, 2015 at 8:20 AM, Juneau Police received a call from a man reporting he struck a bear while riding his motorcycle near mile 32 of Glacier Highway. JPD and Capital City Fire and Rescue responded and found the caller, who had been injured after a bear ran in front of his 2000 BMW motorcycle while he traveled on the highway. The bear, a sow, was killed in the collision. The motorcycle sustained about $5000 damage. The driver, a 58 year-old local resident who was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, was transported to the Bartlett Regional Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Employees of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the Alaska State Troopers were notified and responded. Two young cubs were located in the immediate area and were euthanized.
