INFORMATION RELEASE

The Juneau Police Department, Juneau Rides, and Juneau Freewheelers Bicycle Club would like to invite all Juneau bicycle riders to participate in a community ride on April 18th, 2015, starting at 1 p.m. at Marine Park. The ride will go on to the Mendenhall Glacier parking lot. Riders are encouraged to join in for all or part of the ride.

The volunteer riders for the Be Safe Be Seen Bicycle Safety Project are all special guests at the ride and motorists may see lots of bicycles with headlights and taillights during the community ride. Be Safe Be Seen is still recruiting volunteer riders with 77 people having already signed up leaving 23 slots are still available. Those volunteer riders receive a free set of bike lights, a headlight and a taillight, in exchange for providing information on how the lights impact bicycle safety on Juneau?s roads. Cycle Alaska donated 90 sets of the lights, worth 45 dollars each, and Trek, a bicycle company, donated the other 10 sets of lights. The Be Safe Be Seen Safety Program officially kicks off with the community ride on April 18th.. The project will last for three months, until July 18, 2015. Members of the Juneau Police Department Bike Patrol will be on the ride along with members of Juneau Rides and Juneau Freewheelers Bicycle Club. There will be refreshments and social time at the Mendenhall Glacier at the end of the ride. Riders, along with other members of the public, are invited to ask questions of officers and bicycle experts about bicycle safety laws and practices and the Be Safe Be Seen safety project.
