On July 9th, Juneau Police received several reports from local residents and businesses about an apparent telephone scam. The caller claimed to be a representative of Alaska Electric Light and Power (AEL&P), informed the person their electric bill was overdue, and demanded immediate payment to keep their electricity on. The caller suggested going to a local business, purchasing a pre-paid debit card, and providing the cash-card number over the phone to the caller.
The Juneau Police Department would like to remind residents that utility services, banks, and other businesses with similar accounts do not operate by cash over the telephone, or make demands of immediate cash payment. Representatives from these businesses should know their customers? physical addresses where they receive the service, their customers? account numbers, and the amount owed. If in doubt, ask the caller to verify this information or meet with a representative in person.
