INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Bear shooting
Date: 2014-06-21
From: Sgt. Chris Gifford
Case or Incident: #140621-006
Summary:

On June 21st, 2014 at 2:00PM, Juneau Police responded to a report of a bear inside of a residence in the 400 block of Rawn Way, located above Gastineau Avenue. Residents inside of the small two-story home were still inside and on the first floor when officers arrived. The bear, also located on the first floor appeared in the doorway briefly, before turning to go back inside. A JPD officer fired a shotgun twice at the bear. The bear ran a short distance behind the house and was later found deceased.

Investigation revealed the blackbear entered the home through the front door. The doorknob did not work, enabling the door to be easily pushed open. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game was notified and responded.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
