INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Crimeline Crime of the Week-Burglary
Date: 2014-06-06
From: Lt. Kris Sell
Case or Incident: #140510-006
Summary:

On May 10th, 2014, at about 9:10 in the evening, a 59 year old man called the Juneau Police Department to report that someone pried open the door to his apartment and carried out a safe. The safe contained about $16,500 in cash, an ounce of silver, and ounce of gold in a bar, and 85 gold Krugerrand coins.

A witness saw a man carrying the safe out of the Renninger Street apartment building between about 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. traveling toward Dzantik?i Heeni Middle School. The burglar is described as about thirty years old with brown hair and a medium build. He was wearing jeans and a black sweater. When officers followed the path described by the witness they found a dent in the grass where the man apparently dropped the safe.

On May 24, 2014, a camera from the safe was found at Eagle Beach. A man had found the wet camera on the rocks at low tide just past the Eagle Beach Campground. The man removed the memory card and examined it on his computer. The man located the burglary victim based on the pictures. The burglary victim then alerted JPD that an item from the safe had been found at Eagle Beach.

JPD is looking for anyone who saw suspicious behavior near the apartment or at Eagle Beach.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
