INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Motorboat Collision
Date: 2013-09-17
From: Lt David Campbell
Case or Incident: #130913-019
Summary:

On 09/13/2013, at approximately 6:44 PM, the Juneau Police Department received a 911 call reporting an unattended skiff was dragging a person through the water. The skiff was reported as being in the Gastineau Channel near the Douglas Boat Harbor.

Occupants of another vessel stopped the skiff and discovered that the male being dragged through the water was unresponsive and had sustained severe facial injuries. The injured male was pulled from the water and brought to shore by the Good Samaritans. Another Good Samaritan secured the unattended skiff and brought it to shore.

The investigation revealed that a 47 year old male Juneau resident had been operating a 14 foot skiff ?on step? and struck a 24 foot fiberglass vessel operated by a 91 year old male. There were no injuries reported from the 24 foot vessel.

The 47 year old skiff operator sustained severe injuries and fell overboard due to the collision. The 47 year old male was taken to BRH by Capital City Fire and Rescue. The 14 foot skiff was impounded.

Alcohol appears to be a contributing factor in the collision. JPD officers obtained a search warrant and blood was seized from the 47 year old male at BRH. The blood will be tested at a recognized testing facility.

The investigation is continuing.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
