INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Back to School PSA
Date: 2013-08-20
From: Lt David Campbell
Case or Incident: #PSA
Summary:

08/20/2013, is the first day of public school for most of the Juneau School District.

Drivers are reminded to be vigilant for the increased vehicle and pedestrian activities in and around school zones, and to allow extra time to get to their destinations. The reduced speeds associated with school zones, and violations involving motorists passing school busses that are displaying flashing red lights, will be actively enforced by the Juneau Police Department.

Pedestrians are reminded to cross roads only at crosswalks and to watch for passing vehicles. Pedestrians are also encouraged to wear reflective or bright colored clothing and to walk in groups.

Parents are reminded to talk with their children about safety issues when going to and returning from school. These issues would include horseplay near the roadway or at bus stops, pedestrian safety, stranger safety, and bicycle safety.

The Juneau Police Department hopes that everyone has a safe and productive school year.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
