On March 13, 2013 at about 8:45pm, the Juneau Police Department received multiple reports of a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Mendenhall Loop Road (Loop Road) and Stephen Richard?s Memorial Drive. Officers and Capital City Fire & Rescue responded and located a two vehicle crash blocking the southbound lanes of the intersection.
Investigation revealed that a 2007 Honda Pilot driven by 18 year old Juneau Resident, Michaela Schlechter, failed to yield while turning left from the northbound turn lane of Loop Road onto Stephen Richard?s Memorial Drive, in front of a 1994 Volkswagen Jetta driven by a 20 year old female.
The driver of the Honda and a passenger from the Volkswagen were transported to Bartlett Regional Hospital by private vehicles for non life threatening injuries.
Schlechter was cited for failing to yield when turning left. Both Vehicles were privately towed from the scene. During the investigation and removal of the vehicles, the southbound lane of Loop Road was closed for about 40 minutes.
