INFORMATION RELEASE

On 02-01-2013 at 1:30 AM, the Juneau Police Department received a report from a tow truck driver reporting he had been threatened by a man armed with a handgun in the area of the Sunny Point overpass, on Egan Drive. The caller said the man stopped his vehicle in front of his tow truck, approached the two people in the tow truck, and shot the vehicle the truck was towing. The man was described as carrying a handgun in his rear waistband. After shooting the towed vehicle, the man left the area in a 1996 Honda Civic, in the direction of the Mendenhall Valley.

At 2:24 AM, a JPD officer located a vehicle matching the description of the suspect?s vehicle in the parking lot of a hotel in the 1800 block of Shell Simmons Drive. Officers attempted to make contact with the vehicle?s owner, who had checked into the hotel just minutes before the officers? arrival. The vehicle?s owner was positively identified as the suspect by the two tow truck occupants in a photo line-up. Officers attempted to contact the man, but he did not answer his door. Several rooms in the hotel were evacuated as police attempted to make telephone contact with the man. At 5:00 AM, the suspect exited the room and was taken into custody by police.

The suspect, 23 year-old local resident Darshan DOGRA, was arrested and charged with two counts of Assault in the Third Degree. He was lodged at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center where he was held without bail. Alcohol was involved.

The investigation in this case is continuing.
