Case or Incident: #121104-002
On November 4, 2012 at about 0100 hours, Juneau Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2012 Toyota on Front Street in downtown Juneau. The vehicle failed to stop for police and continued to drive through the downtown area with the police trying to stop it. After the second time through town the vehicle took off at high speed on Franklin Street going in the wrong direction and continued out Thane Road. Officers continued to follow the vehicle with lights and sirens but were unable to get the vehicle stopped. Additional officers on foot in the area of Franklin Street attempted to flag the driver down and noted that the driver and only occupant saw the officers.
While on Thane Road, Officers lost sight of the vehicle near the avalanche chute. After the vehicle was not immediately located, a search for the vehicle began and it was later found overturned on the beach just past the avalanche chute. The vehicle was totaled and the driver was not found in the vehicle or in the area of the crash site. Capital City Fire and Rescue and Juneau Police searched the area for the driver. After an extensive search information was received that a local cab driver picked up the driver and transported the driver home.
Officers later met with the driver, 25 year old Anchorage resident, Adam Calhoun. Calhoun had substantial injuries from the crash and was transported to Bartlett Regional Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Prior to transport he was interviewed by Police. The reason for the crash and failing to stop for the police is still under investigation.
