On 08/04/2012, at approximately 12:27 PM, the Juneau Police Department received multiple 911 calls concerning a two car collision on the Glacier Highway near Western Auto. Capital City Fire Rescue personnel and JPD officers arrived and confirmed that two vehicles were involved in a head on collision.
The investigation revealed that a 2006 Jeep Liberty, driven by 36 year old Juneau resident Rebecca VANKEUREN, was attempting to turned left from the Glacier Highway outbound into the Western Auto Parking lot. VANKEUREN failed to yield to oncoming traffic and was struck by a 1998 GMC Jimmy, driven by a 49 year old male Juneau resident. There was one passenger in the 2006 Liberty; a 38 year old female Juneau resident, who was transported to the Bartlett Regional Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. There were three passengers in 1998 GMC; a 35 year old female Juneau resident, a 68 year old female Juneau resident, and a 1 year old male Juneau resident. The 68 year old female was also transported to the Bartlett Regional Hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
VANKEUREN was arrested for Driving Under the Influence (DUI). She was transported to JPD for DUI processing and then ultimately transported to and lodged at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center. She was additionally charged with two counts of Assault 2nd Degree a Class B Felony, and Reckless Endangerment a A Misdemeanor. VANKEUREN was held at LCCC on No Bail.
The investigation is continuing.
