On 04/26/2012, about 3:00 pm, the Juneau Police Department received a report from the Principal of Gastineau Elementary School that one of their fifth grade students was walking home from school and solicited by a male driver in a small dark green vehicle. The vehicle was parked near Gastineau School.
The male driver told the fifth grader that his mother asked him to pick up the student and take him home. The student was not aware of this plan and did not recognize the male in the vehicle. The student then asked the male for the family password to which the male in the vehicle began to guess. When he did not know the password, the student ended the conversation and went home. Once at home he notified his mother, who called the school.
Due to the student?s quick thinking, he made it home safely and without incident. The Juneau Police Department wants to remind parents to talk with their children about strangers and to come up with safety plans should they be encountered.
Investigation into this incident continues.
