INFORMATION RELEASE
Date: 2012-03-03
From: Sgt. Gifford
Case or Incident: #120302-010
On 03-02-2012 at 8:35 PM, a Juneau Police officer was making a traffic stop on a 1994 Honda Civic driving without headlights on Egan Drive, near the McNugget Intersection. When the officer turned on the patrol vehicle's overhead lights, a 2004 Dodge pickup truck in the lefthand lane began swerving to its right, striking the Honda which was in the right lane. The collision caused the Honda to veer to its right, nearly leaving the roadway. The Dodge continued turning right onto Glacier Highway at the McNugget intersection.
Another JPD patrol unit was near the intersection of Glacier Highway and Trout Street, and located the Dodge truck. The officer attempted a traffic stop on the truck on Old Dairy Road, but the driver continued traveling for a short distance, before coming to a stop. The driver of the truck got out of the vehicle and ran from the officer. Additional JPD patrol officers responded to the area, and the driver was found hiding in a private lot about thirty minutes later.
The driver of the truck was identified as 18 year-old local resident Andrew C. Lawson. He was charged with Driving Under the Influence, Refusing a Breath Sample, Failure to Provide Information After an Accident, Failure to Stop at the Direction of a Police Officer, and two counts of Reckless Endangerment. All charges are misdemeanors.
There was minor damage to the Honda, and neither occupant of the Honda were injured. Two passengers in the Dodge were cited for Minor Consuming.
All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
