On 1-18-12, at about 6:58pm the Juneau Police Department and Capital City Fire & Rescue responded to a report of a two vehicle crash on Back Loop Road at the Mendenhall River Bridge. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2006 Toyota Tacoma, driven by a 50 year old man, was headed eastbound on Back Loop Road. The vehicle crossed the centerline colliding with a 1995 Toyota Corolla driven by an 18 year old man. Both vehicles were totaled and towed from the scene.
The driver of the Tacoma had minor injuries and was released at the scene. The driver of the Corolla was extricated from the vehicle, transported to Bartlett Regional Hospital by ambulance, and later transported from Juneau by air medivac. His status is unknown.
Back Loop Road was closed in both directions at the Mendenhall River Bridge for about one hour.
Investigation into the crash continues.
