On August 3, 2011 the Juneau Police Department received a report from a 31 year old Juneau resident that approximately $200 of heating fuel had been stolen from the tank at the back of his home located on the 5900 block of Sunset Street. This is by no means an isolated incident as it is the 19th report that JPD has received so far this calendar year with a total estimated dollar value of $10,000.00.
In 2010, JPD received 11 reports with a total estimated value of $5,000.00.

As you can see this crime seems to be on the rise. Here are a few ideas that may prevent it from happening to you.
Secure Your Fuel Tank. - Locking tank caps can be purchased from fuel providers or at local hardware stores.
Be a Nosey Neighbor! - Pay attention to what is happening in your neighborhood and report suspicious activity to the police department.
Video Surveillance. - If this has happened to you, you suspect it has happened to you or you just want to be extra vigilant, install a simple video surveillance system to monitor your heating oil tank.
