Subject: Motor Vehicle Collision - Injury

Summary:

On 07/20/2011, at about 1346 hours, the Juneau Police Department and Capital City Fire and Rescue were dispatched to a Motor Vehicle Collision with an injury involving a 2000 Honda Civic and a 2005 Suzuki motorcycle. The collision occurred at the intersection of Mendenhall Loop Road and Montana Creek Road.

The investigation revealed Juneau resident Phillip MELENDREZ was driving a 2000 Honda Civic and had pulled off to the shoulder on Mendenhall Loop Road near Montana Creek Road. Juneau resident Harry TULLIS was driving a 2005 Suzuki motorcycle and was passing the Honda Civic while the Honda Civic was parked on the shoulder. As TULLIS was passing, MELENDREZ pulled back into the lane of travel and struck the motorcycle, throwing TULLIS from the motorcycle.

TULLIS sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to Bartlett Regional Hospital for treatments of his injuries.

Mendenhall Loop Road at Montana Creek Road was shut down for approximately 30 minutes while officers from the Juneau Police Department investigated the collision.

MELENDREZ was cited for Careless Driving.
