On 05/21/2011, at approximately 7:53 AM, the Juneau Police Department received a report of a single vehicle roll over accident on Egan Drive outbound past the Breakwater Inn. Juneau Police officers and members of Capital City Fire Rescue responded to the accident.
The driver, and sole occupant, of the vehicle was declared deceased by Capital City Fire Rescue personnel. The driver was identified as 22 year old Juneau resident Steven Ryan LEE. Next of kin has been notified.
The investigation revealed that LEE was driving a 1990 Chevy truck on Egan Drive outbound in the right lane of travel. A witness estimated the truck as driving between 50-55 mph, in a 40 mph zone. The truck took the left corner past the Breakwater Inn wide and rolled up the embankment. The truck rolled through a fence and stopped when the cab of the truck struck a large tree. It was raining at the time of the accident and the roadway was wet. Speed is considered a contributing factor for the accident.
The Alaska State Medical Examiner?s Office was notified. LEE will be sent to Anchorage for an examination by the Medical Examiner.
Egan Drive outbound was temporarily shut down at Highland Drive. Traffic was routed onto the Glacier Highway. Egan Drive outbound was closed for approximately 4 hours and 20 minutes while crash investigators processed the accident scene. Egan Drive was reopened at approximately 12:13 PM.
