Man Transported for Medical Evaluation Following Downtown Incident
On October 9, 2026, at approximately 9:44 a.m., the Juneau Police Department received a report of a disturbance in the 600 block of Willoughby Avenue involving a man yelling nonsensical statements and holding up a knife. Responding officers located the man walking on Willoughby Ave, but he fled on foot. At the time, Officers were also investigating a report that the man was trespassing in the area of Foodland in violation of his conditions of release.
At approximately 11:08 a.m., JPD received another report of the man acting erratically near South Franklin Street and Front Street. He was reportedly making nonsensical statements and waving his arms, with a knife protruding from a jacket pocket. Officers attempted to contact him, but he again fled on foot. Because the man had a knife, officers proceeded cautiously and gave him space in an effort to de-escalate the situation.
Officers continued to observe the man as he moved through the downtown area. Initially, he was not holding the knife or threatening anyone. He later removed the knife from his jacket and began waving it around, but was not threatening or endangering anyone at that time.
While officers requested medical assistance and a mobile crisis response, the man entered the Public Advocacy Center at 150 West Third Street. He immediately went into a side room and locked himself inside, alone. Multiple people were inside the building, but JPD is not aware of anyone who interacted with or was threatened by the man. Third Street between Main Street and Seward Street was closed during the incident.
Officers attempted to communicate with the man and persuade him to leave the room. JPD crisis negotiators also responded to assist. After approximately two hours, the man surrendered the knife and a screwdriver he had been carrying, but remained locked inside the room.
The man eventually came out voluntarily and was detained by officers without further incident. He was transported to Bartlett Regional Hospital for medical evaluation due to his condition.
No one was injured during the incident. During the response, the man threatened police with the knife, but did not threaten any members of the public.
