From: Deputy Chief Krag Campbell
Case or Incident: #2026-09090010
Summary:

Police Respond to Report of Man With Rifle Near School

On September 9, 2026, at approximately 8:05 a.m., the Juneau Police Department received a report of an adult man who had parked near the Dzantik’i Heeni Optional Programs building on Renninger Street and walked into the woods near the playground carrying a rifle.

Out of an abundance of caution, school administrators immediately initiated emergency protocols and placed the campus into a temporary lockdown. JPD officers responded to the area, searched the surrounding trails, identified the man, and investigated the circumstances.

The investigation determined that the man had entered the woods to hunt and that there was no threat to the school, students, or staff. After JPD cleared the situation, the lockdown was lifted and normal school operations resumed.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
