INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Motor Vehicle Crash Results in Injuries and DUI Arrest
Date: 2025-01-04
From: JPD PIO Erann Kalwara
Case or Incident: #2025-01010021
Summary:

On January 1st, 2025, at approximately 4:00 a.m., JPD officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident at the end of Thane Road. Upon arrival, two vehicles were found, unoccupied with severe damage.

A gold 2007 Toyota sustained significant front-end damage, a shattered windshield, and the driver’s side airbag had deployed. The second vehicle, a maroon 2011 Toyota Highlander, had considerable rear-end damage. Both appeared to be totaled.

Capital City Fire/Rescue arrived on the scene and assisted JPD with a search of the area for potential victims. None were located.

JPD officers later contacted three people (all juveniles) at BRH who had sustained serious injuries consistent with a motor vehicle collision. 19 year-old Juneau resident Lance Martell was contacted at a private residence.  The investigation determined that Martell was driving the gold Toyota Rav4 and struck the Toyota Highlander which was parked. All three passengers in the Rav4 were injured. Martell was arrested for Driving Under the Influence, evaluated at BRH. He was later transported to and lodged at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center, on charges of DUI, three counts of Assault in the 3rd degree, three counts of Reckless Endangerment, and Duty of Operator to Give Information.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
