INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Drug Arrest on Erin Street

Summary:

On 07/08/2024, Investigators with the Southeast Alaska Cities Against Drugs (SEACAD) task force, located a suspicious package being shipped to Juneau in the mail, believed to contain narcotics.

During the investigation, SEACAD located and seized the following items believed to be in connection with the use and distribution of controlled substances:

  • Approximately 2,842 pills imprinted with the “M30” logo, suspected of containing fentanyl
  •  77.25 net grams of methamphetamine
  • 0.94 net grams of cocaine

The combined value of the seized narcotics is estimated at $65,700.

SEACAD delivered the package to its intended destination, a residence in the 8100 block of Erin Street. About forty minutes after the delivery, 46-year-old James Robert Newman and 43-year-old Brenda Beth Oboyle, arrived at the residence in a vehicle. James Newman went inside the residence, while Brenda Oboyle stayed in the vehicle. Soon afterward, the package was opened and SEACAD investigators contacted the occupants of the residence. Newman and two other adult males were contacted inside the residence, and Oboyle was contacted in the vehicle.

Following the investigations, James Robert Newman and Brenda Beth Oboyle were placed under arrest and taken to the Lemon Creek Correctional Center.

Criminal charges for James R. Newman:

  • Misconduct Involving a controlled substance in the 2nd degree, a class A felony offense
  • Misconduct Involving a controlled substance in the 3rd degree, a class B felony offense
  • Misconduct Involving a controlled substance in the 4th degree, a class C felony offense
  • Misconduct Involving a controlled substance in the 4th degree, a class C felony offense
  • Misconduct Involving a controlled substance in the 4th degree, a class C felony offense

Criminal charges for Brenda B. Oboyle

  • Misconduct Involving a controlled substance in the 2nd degree, a class A felony offense
  • Misconduct Involving a controlled substance in the 3rd degree, a class B felony offense

SEACAD, Southeast Alaska Cities Against Drugs, is a regional task force comprised of municipal police departments from Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka, Haines, Skagway, Petersburg, Hoonah, Wrangell, Craig and Yakutat, the Alaska State Troopers, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, United States Postal Inspection Service, and Coast Guard Investigative Service. Together, they work to investigate drug importation and distribution in the Southeast Alaska region.
