Project Overview

UPDATE 10/20/20: At the October 12 PRAC meeting, the PRAC made the following recommendation: The PRAC recommends the Department go with status quo management of the Montana Creek area for the 2020 - 2021 winter season, address conflicts as they arise, and continue to work with the different user groups for a long term solution of the Montana Creek area and come before the PRAC with a recommendation before the 2021 - 2022 winter season begins.

Parks Maintenance staff will close the vehicle gate in late October and remove the panels on the kissing gate to allow for pedestrian, bike and off highway vehicle use on the Montana Creek Road through the winter.

UPDATE 10/6/20: Public comments received between August 6, 2020 through September 30, 2020 have been included in the Associated Documents section below. In addition, a Change.org petition was submitted and sorted to show Auke Bay, Douglas and Juneau residents at the top.

UPDATE 10/1/20: The public comment period has closed.

The Parks & Recreation Department is considering a proposal to close a portion of Montana Creek Road to motorized vehicles from November 1 through April 1. The public is encouraged to submit their comments through September 30, 2020. Comments already submitted will be considered and do not need to be resubmitted.

If approved, the closed area would extend from the gate by the Hank Harmon Rifle Range to the timber bridge across Montana Creek. Violations could be punishable by a fine of $150. The closure has been requested by the public and the Juneau Nordic Ski Club.
