Youth Development Leader I (Shelter)

Part Time Limited Approximately 15 Hours per week $18.62 - $19.88 Hourly (DOQ)

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

An ideal candidate for this position is someone who enjoys teens and young adults and who is willing to meet youth where they are at and not give up on them. We are looking for someone who has and understands healthy boundaries when working with vulnerable populations. We are looking for someone who understands and is willing to continue to learn how childhood trauma impacts the life-span and how systemic inequities and historical trauma impact our community today. Strong communication and empathy skills are a must!

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

Positions are located at Shéiyi X̱aat Hit Youth Shelter in the Mendenhall valley. Shifts vary, are relief, and evenings and weekends.

Job Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

Youth Development Leaders are responsible for day to day supervision of youth in the shelter. You will do intake paperwork with incoming youth, cook meals, provide meaningful connection and support, and you may drive youth to appointments and/or to school. You assist in creating a trauma informed, culturally responsive space that holds youth up and provides them with safety during difficult times. You will help youth develop life skills and support them in talking through options when they have difficult decisions to make. You will make note of progress or areas where youth may be really struggling and share this with the team. You will also do data entry and file paperwork.

Minimum Qualifications

DO I HAVE THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS JOB – OUR MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Requirements: Graduation from high school or the equivalent; First Aid and CPR certification within 30 days of appointment;                 and, any combination of experience or post-secondary education totaling three (3) months that includes volunteering or working with youth, education, job readiness, employment skills, caregiving or achieving healthy behaviors and developing healthy life style choices. Must be at least 21 years of age.

One course from an accredited college in a human related field may substitute for experience. A secondary degree in any field will also substitute for experience.

NOTE:                   Under Alaska Statute 12.62.400 (9) Appointment to this position is offered conditionally, pending the results of a National Criminal History report through the FBI. Applicants must submit their fingerprints to continue in the hiring approval process. The applicant will receive a copy of the report of findings and may dispute within 5 days of receiving them. Human Resources evaluates the results to ensure the applicant does not have any convictions that result in a direct nexus to the primary duties involving supervising minors. Applicants who materially misrepresent any information provided in the employment process will be excluded from further consideration or may be dismissed if already employed.
