Although this sequel to "The Boy in the Suitcase", co-written with Agnete Friis, is the second in a series, it also works as a stand-alone title. Another well-written Scandinavian mystery, the protagonist is Nina Borg, a nurse who works with illegal immigrants in Denmark. This work threatens her marriage and impacts the life of her children.
Two Roma teenage boys discover medical waste left behind in a destroyed Russian hospital. Valuable on the black market, they steal the waste and travel to Denmark as illegal immigrants where they have found a buyer. The plight of illegal immigrants, nationalist reaction to different religious beliefs, and family dynamics in diverse cultures are all issues that Kaaberbol & Friis weave into this fast-paced gritty mystery.
Taut and well-written, this series is a good addition to the "Scandinavian Noir" genre.
