Walk Southeast Registration Open through May 6

It’s nearing time to Walk Southeast! Registration for the 5th Annual Walk Southeast is open now through May 6 with the virtual trek to Ketchikan beginning on May 1. See what Southeast Alaska community you can 'walk' to by September 1 by tracking the miles your walk, run or hike through the summer. You'll earn tickets for the prize drawings along the way and be entered to win a 1-night stay at Amalga Cabin or great gear and swag from our sponsors. Walk at least 150 miles and you'll be eligible for the Alaska Airlines for two round-trip tickets. Participation is free. Walk Southeast. Fly Alaska!

Kaxdigoowu Héen Dei (Brotherhood Bridge Trail) Work Begins April 17

Work will begin on Wednesday, April 17 on the Kaxdigoowu Héen Dei (Brotherhood Bridge Trail) Improvements project. This project, led by the State of Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities, will reconstruct the northern portion of the trail between Montana Creek and River Road trailhead and replace the pedestrian bridge over Montana Creek. Construction is currently expected to last through September. The trail between River Road and Montana Creek, as well as the immediate bridge site, will be closed to the public for the duration of construction. Please obey all posted trail closure signs and barricades for the safety of yourself and others.

Registration for Swim Lessons at AGB Open August 19

Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool will offer swim lesson sessions this spring for preschool & youth age groups. Each session lasts four weeks, April 29 to May 22, with eight lessons in total. Preschool classes are open to children ages 3-5 and youth classes to ages 6-12.

Registration will open on Friday, April 19 at noon for classes. To register, visit the Parks & Recreation online registration catalog and click on the Juneau Pools tab. Registrations will not be taken over the phone, in person, or in advance. All classes cost $80 + tax for eight lessons.

All lessons are thirty minutes long. Classes are offered in a variety of time slots between 4:15 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday; see the registration portal for a detailed schedule. Swimmers should register for lessons according to their age and skill level. The maximum capacity for each class varies between 4 to 8 students based on the age group and number of instructors per class.

Free Skate | April 20

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska is sponsoring the next Free Skate on April 20 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. and Big, Littles, and the community are all invited! Skate rental is included, however they are limited and first come, first served.

Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool Closed April 22-26

Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool will be temporarily closed to the public from Monday, April 22 through Friday, April 26 while the women's locker room floors are refinished to improve drainage. Following the recent reopening of the facility, an issue affecting drainage was identified, requiring immediate corrective action. During the temporary closure, Dimond Park Aquatic Center will be open to the community.

Please also note that AGB Pool will be closed from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from April 9-18 for maintenance leading up to the closure. Visit the Juneau Pools website for complete hours at both facilities.

DPAC Closed April 29 - May 12

Dimond Park Aquatic Center will be closed Monday, April 29 through Sunday, May 12 for annual maintenance that will include include draining and refilling all three pools, re-lamping the natatorium and underwater lights, servicing equipment, deep cleaning the pool deck, and tile work. During the closure, Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool will be open to the public. For more information about AGB hours and activities, see the calendar at juneaupools.org. DPAC will reopen to the public on Monday, May 13.

Jensen-Olson Arboretum Moves to Summer Hours

The Jensen-Olson Arboretum will move to summer hours beginning April 3. The grounds will be open to visitors Wednesday – Sunday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and closed to the public Monday and Tuesday. This year JOA celebrates its 17th year as a free public display garden in Juneau. The highlight of the garden are the many varieties of primroses held in JOA's Nationally AccreditedTM Collection for the genus Primula (primroses), which begin blooming in April and continue through frost.

JOA is located at 23035 Glacier Hwy. The main parking lot is adjacent to the highway, with accessible parking—closer to the gardens—located down the driveway.

Family Fun Night | April 26

The final Family Fun Night at Dimond Park Field House for the spring session is April 26 with extended hours, 4-6:30 p.m., and Early Learning Fair. AEYC-SEA is hosting the event which includes parent resources, kindergarten registration (bring birth certificate and shot records), health screening and vaccination information, and prizes. Although this event is designed for families with young children ages 0-6, older siblings are also welcome. Toys will be set out for play and registration is not required.

Adopt-A-Flower 2024

Adopt-A-Flower and help the Landscape Crews beautify the city! Our landscape crew maintains almost 200 hanging baskets, 60 flower barrels, and 50 flower beds from the airport to the cruise ship docks and relies on the generosity of our citizens to do so. Donations can be made online (look under ‘special events’) by choosing any combination of amounts to reach your desired donation total. All donations received by April 30 will be included on this year’s recognition sign that will be on display at Marine Park Plaza. The first five to donate $500+ will receive a beautiful hanging basket as a thank you from the crew! **ALL 5 HANGING BASKETS HAVE BEEN CLAIMED**

Proposed Regulations: Special Event User Permits – Public Comment Period Now Open through April 29

Notice is given that Parks & Recreation has proposed to amend Title 11 of the Administrative Code of Regulations to issue special use permits for gatherings of more than 100 people within the limits of municipal parks and recreation areas.

Written public comments will be taken until 12 p.m. on Monday, April 29 and should be emailed to [email protected] or mailed/delivered to: CBJ Parks & Recreation, 155 Heritage Way, Juneau, AK 99801. The assembly will discuss the regulation at the April 29 Assembly meeting at 7:00 p.m. under “New Business”.

New Pay-By-Phone Parking Begins March 27

Beginning Wednesday, March 27 a new pay-by-phone option will be available for CBJ’s hourly parking lots in Downtown Juneau, including Shopper’s Lot, North Franklin Lot, and the Marine Park Garage (Level 1). No changes are being made to parking fees ($0.75 per hour) or enforcement hours (8 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday – Friday).

Using the free ParkSmarter app, customers can now pay for parking with a credit or debit card, add time to a parking session, and obtain receipts. The free app is available for download on both iOS and Android devices. For more information, visit the parking website.

Commercial Use Applications

Late applications for 2024 commercial use permits are accepted and are subject to a $250 late fee beginning April 1. Commercial use permits authorize commercial activity on CBJ parklands. There is a non-refundable $250 application fee for the first location and a $100 application fee for every additional location from the same vendor. Preschool Open Gym Returns to Mount Jumbo Gym

Preschool Open Gym offers children ages 6 months to 6 years a place to run and play in a warm and dry environment during the colder months. Preschool Open Gym will be held Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Mt. Jumbo Gym (909 4th Street). The program will continue through April 26, 2024.

Preschool Open Gym sessions cost $5 per child, with no charge for parents/guardians or infants under 6 months. Turf for Tots passes and Parks & Rec Winter Passes are also accepted, though please note that the Winter Pass must be assigned to the child. 10-visit passes and monthly Preschool Open Gym passes are available for purchase online under the Mt. Jumbo Gym tab and may also be used at the Field House for Turf for Tots.

Reduced Hours at Pipeline Skate Park

In order to address safety concerns stemming from a sharp increase in vandalism and drug paraphernalia litter on park grounds, Jackie Renninger Park (Pipeline Skate Park) will be open for reduced hours until further notice. Starting immediately, the park will be open from 3:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. on weekends. All gates and facilities will be closed outside these hours of operation. Park staff and JPD will also be conducting extra patrols in the park.
